Constructed in 1906, 2 Hammond Street originally housed Merrill Trust Company and a tobacco retailer. The freestanding structure was one of the few downtown buildings to withstand the devastation of the Great Fire of 1911.
If you’re familiar with 2 Hammond, you likely recognize it by the signature front columns, however, all six were not always part of its facade. Four original columns framed the grand entry of the bank on the left, with two additional columns added to balance the right side when the bank expanded in 1914.
Pike Developers worked closely with High Tide Capital to renovate the building in 2021, which was then home to the Bangor Chamber of Commerce and the Hammond Street Senior Center. When the Senior Center closed, Pike transformed the upper floors into contemporary residential units. Collaborating closely with the Chamber of Commerce, the team ensured minimal disruption during the renovation as they added four one-bedroom and four two-bedroom apartments.
The building’s unique trapezoid shape, with windows gracing all four sides, presented both challenges and opportunities. Pike embraced the building’s distinct angles, optimizing the space for maximum efficiency while retaining as much of its historic charm as possible.
