Originally built in 1912 as the country’s flagship First National Bank, 33 State Street remains one of Bangor’s most unique buildings.
By the 1930s, the building transitioned to become the headquarters for Bangor Hydro, where it remained part of the utility company’s office campus through the 90s. Over the years, Bangor Hydro not only expanded its offices through most of the city block but also merged 33 State Street with 213 Exchange Street.
When Pike Developers began working on the project in X, the vision was to renovate the space into modern apartments while honoring the building’s historic character.
Today the property features 15 high-end residential units while preserving the original hallway-centric layout. Old bank vaults have been creatively repurposed – from mailrooms to laundry spaces, and even bedrooms. Dozens of large, restored windows infuse each apartment with natural light. Another standout feature of 33 State is its ornate stairwell, where the team at Pike recreated the magic of an original skylight using LEDs to simulate the feeling of gazing up at the sky.
The first floor, once the original bank lobby, leaves room for growth and opportunity for someone with a vision.
